Hard work paid off

This evening the boys were in the dojo to test for their next ranks in Heiwado karate. It has been especially challenging for Hamza, because his school schedule leaves him little time to train. But both boys have been trying to make it to class as often as possible recently, and their hard work paid off.

The tesing is conducted by rank, and since Bilal is at a lower rank than Hamza, he tested first.

He got a little nervous in the middle, but was able to complete his katas, before taking a seat to watch the other students.

Hamza impressed us all with his test. No obvious sign of nervousness there!

The Senseis took a small break to make their decisions, and then returned to award the new certificates. Bilal, promoted to sixth kyu Shodan.

And Hamza was awarded his third degree black belt. Eleven years of training in the dojo paid off!

Proud of my hard working young men today! And congratulations to all who were promoted.

A great way to end the week!

Birthday celebration

We went to the Cheesecake Factory for lunch, to celebrate Hamza's birthday. Safa made a special trip home for his birthday, which was lovely, especially since we had been in Auburn last week, and she will be coming back on Wednesday evening for fall break. But she loves her brothers, and one of the best things about her staying in state for college, is that she can drive home whenever she wants, even if just for a day. She got home at 10am yesterday, and left to head back to Auburn this morning to 9am. So, a short but sweet trip.

Farah and the kids were able to join us, and we had to wait a bit for a table for a party of 9. So we roamed around outside until our table was called. I love that so many restaurants give you the opportunity to be texted when your table is ready, so you don't have to sit inside the crowded restaurant waiting. Especially since it was such a pretty day outside.

We were finally seated, and able to order our food.

I had the chance to sit next to this cutie:

Also took a quick pick with my hubby. still haven't quite mastered the art of taking a selfie, but making progress, haha!

The meal was delicious, and of course, we all ordered cheesecake to go.

Happy birthday, Hamza!

Another year goes by

It seems like not too long ago, that this little one came into our lives, and brought so much joy with him:

He had the cutest way of sleeping with his bum in the air, and there was no other way you could put him to sleep. And when he was awake, he'd always have a delightfully earnest look on his face.

Then we barely blinked, and he was already sitting upright

What seems like only a couple of sleeps later, he was into everything, and his favorite place to be, was wedged between the chairs underneath the dining table.

The toddler years crept up on us too...

... as did did his little attitude that came with it!

And here we are now, seventeen years later, although it only seems like yesterday. We have a fine young man who is bright and self assertive, and looking forward to college already.

We are very proud of his accomplishments, and pray for a successful future for him. Happy birthday, Hamza!

In Auburn

We took a trip to Auburn today to meet Safa. It was a dreary drive down, with grey skies and a steady, misting on the windshield, but seeing Safa definitely brightened our day. We took an early lunch at a nearby Sushi restaurant, Arigato.

The food was plentiful, and delicious! We'll be back for sure.

After lunch Safa took us to one of her favorite stores, Hastings, where we browsed books, music and novelties, before heading back to her apartment for a quick game of Phase 10.

Not a busy day, but it was surely great to catch up with Safa, and see how she is enjoying college life. We will be seeing her back home in a couple of weeks when she has a couple of days off for fall break.
