Home construction, part XIII

We are almost into the last week of October, and the house is starting to look a lot closer to livable. Still on target to close on October 31st.

October 21, 2013: The counter has been installed on the kitchen counter.

The vanity in the master shower has a waterfall faucet. We found a very cute vanity, at a bargain price, but then splurged on the faucet. It completed the look so well!

The fixtures in the master shower have been installed.

And the bath tub, which we will hardly ever use. But we were advised that installing a tub in the master bathroom is absolutely essential, if we ever want to consider selling the home.

Upstairs, the carpet has been installed in the bedrooms. This is Hamza's bedroom:

October 22, 2013: The French doors in the study are also up, but still need to be painted.

Close-up of the kitchen counter:

You can see that the stove top has also been installed.

My Wolf stove is the best! Some things, you just can't compromise on! The fridge has also been hooked up.

In the laundry room the utility sink is in place. I'm glad we made the decision to add cabinets in the laundry room also, they will surely come in handy!

Here is Safa's pretty orange bedroom with the carpet installed. I think the color really grows on you:

October 23, 2013: The drum light in the study is up. Yes, we have power!

This light fixture is one of my favorites, the cute little lampshades complete the look in the powder room! And yes, we did rotate the shades so that the seams would not show in the front.

The bookcase is up in the heart room. there is desk space on either side of it.

One of my favorite features of our kitchen (a close second to the stove top), is the appliance garage. It is a great way to conceal all the heavy appliances without having to stash them in cabinets underneath. I don't have a photo if it open, but the hinges draw the door upwards and outwards. and of course, there is an electrical outlet inside, so the appliances don't even have to be moved far from the storage area. So innovative!

Here is the one of the vanities in the master bathroom. We are waiting for the hand cut mirrors to be delivered. The faucets will be installed on top of the mirror:

The shelving is up in the closets:

And outside the house, the wrought iron rails are up in the front garden:

That leaves only one week until we finally get possession of our new home!

Lucky Me!

A play date with not one, not two, but three boys! Granted, one of them was my own, but still, it sure was a boy packed, fun packed day!

The cousins came over to spend an entire day with us a couple of weeks ago. Mom and dad had to work, and the babysitter was taking care of the littlest guy, who can sometimes be a handful.

They started off the day with a very energetic game of ball, inside the house! Needless to say, there was a casualty, but thankfully not one of the boys. It was a ceramic vase, which has since been replaced with something more durable. Hey, when fun happens, accidents happen too! No big deal, but they all did agree that playing with a large ball inside the house was maybe not such a good idea. Fortunately, the weather was perfect for outdoor play! First of all, the boys took turns 'driving' and riding in the minivan:

Then, out cam the Tonka trucks!

All that playing outside made the boys thirsty, so out came cups of ice water for everyone. Except, it was less about drinking the water, and more about challenging each other to see whose cube of ice would melt first?

We came back inside for a delicious lunch of chicken fingers and cheese toast. After lunch the boys chilled with their devices for  just a little while. And before you know it, we were back outside again, with a trip to the local playground! There was a lot of swinging...

And climbing...

Rocking...

Sliding,

And more of the same!

On the way home I had to run by Sam's to grab some supplies for the office. I admit, that part was tricky, trying to manipulate a full shopping cart with three boys hanging on. But, we survived that too, and it was a great day all around!

Our Christmas Party

As is our tradition, we hosted our annual Christmas party this past week. A bit earlier than usual, but we wanted to make sure that the whole staff, and as much of their family members as possible, would be able to attend. This year we settled on something that required very little planning on my part, but everyone was pleased with the decision. After all, who doesn't like Mexican food?

We met at the local Habanero's Mexican restaurant for dinner on Tuesday evening. I was able to bring the boys up after I picked Hamza up from school. They weren't too keen on getting in the group photo, but we manged to pack almost everyone else in. Thanks, Vanessa, for taking the picture!

We are so fortunate to work with a great group of folks, they are just like an extended family for us!

Sunny day

Sometimes we manage to pack a lot of fun into one day, and we has just such a Saturday a couple of weeks ago. Sadly, Zakir wasn't able to join in the fun because he had a conference to attend, but the boys and I made the most of it.

Bilal and I started the morning of with a couple of highly competitive games of Jenga.

Later, I took the boys out and we had a picnic in the park. The weather was perfect for some outdoor fun.

In the afternoon, Hefty received a long overdue bath, with special spa treatment. I really don't want to share the 'before' pictures, too embarrassing!

Even the interior was squeaky clean by the time the boys were done. Of course, with the amount of driving I do in an average week, it wasn't destined to stay clean for long, but for a few hours, at least, it passed the White Glove test!

Getting chilly

First fire of the season:

And it's only early November. I wonder how it's going to feel for the rest of the winter? There's nothing more heartwarming than logs burning in the fireplace!

A Fall weekend outdoors

Sometimes it feels like we don't slow down enough to take in the beauty of our surroundings. So last Saturday we made the extra effort to head outdoors to enjoy the beautiful color changing foliage of our Alabama Fall.

On the recommendation of a friend we headed to Horse Pens 40, which is a nature park no more than a 45 minute drive from our home. I can't believe we'd never checked out this hidden gem ever before! The park is home to some amazing natural rock formations, as well as a great variety of flora and fauna. The day was chilly and brisk, but the sun was bright, making for a gorgeous fall day.

As soon as Bilal saw the opportunity for climbing, he was in heaven.

It was hard to keep up with him!

And if you think our dear teenager did not accompany us on this trip, you'd be wrong. He was hard to keep up with too, but because he didn't want anything to do with us. Maybe waking him up at 10:30am was just too early for him! So he acted like the elusive sixteen year old he can be. Yes, he's there, in the distance!

And up there, on that rock:

But we didn't let his reluctance bring us down, it was a beautiful day!

Bilal was so disappointed to leave, he just couldn't have enough of climbing rocks. We will probably have to bring him back again some day soon!
