Saturday Morning at the Dojo

The JIKA Dojo held a car wash/ bake sale Saturday morning, for the students who are heading to the national tournament. The boys aren't competing, but they went along to help out.

Sensei was also selling some delicious homemade jellies.

There was rain in the forecast, but fortunately it held out until much later in the day.

Flagging down cars

Do you think they attracted enough attention?

Crazy Hair Day

It's been a good week of fundraising for the school. Bilal's class had the most pledges of support in the first grade, so the class had all kinds of fun things planned for this week. On Tuesday they took pillows and special drinks to school (soda, juice, Powerade, etc.) instead of water for snack. Today was crazy hair day. And trust me, Bilal's hair looked crazier than the photo depicts. He actually had turquoise hair gel at the tips of those spikes! Tomorrow is the actual fun run, and the kids will run 25-35 laps. And, they get to take in electronics and handheld games to play. I have a feeling there's not going to be a lot of school work going on!

Braces Off

And impressions have been taking. Next week Hamza will go back to get his retainer, that he will pretty much be wearing indefinitely.

It's going to take a while to get used to seeing him without all that hardware in his mouth.

And he is officially an inch and a half taller than his Mama now, and growing taller at a pretty good pace. He is very pleased about that, of course!

Celebrating nineteen years

Today is our nineteenth anniversary. Something to celebrate for sure. It was a usual day at work, with a usual evening at home, but yesterday Zakir and I went out to dinner instead. We strolled around the Summit for a while, just because we had the time. That is a very rare occurrence. Usually if we go out together, we have a goal (get groceries, walk the dog, go to a meeting, etc.), so it felt quite leisurely to just walk around and browse some stores with no fixed plan. As the stores started to close we went to the Cheesecake Factory for dinner. Had a lovely time just chatting, mostly about the future. We have a lot of decisions to make soon. And we brought cheesecake home for the kids, of course!

My anniversary gift. Now how on earth does Zakir expect me to keep this alive?! Me, with the brownest thumb on the face of the planet! Beautiful orchid and bamboo, though!
Hoping for many more anniversaries to enjoy together.

Trussville Clean Up Day

In honor of Earth Day, April 22nd, there was a clean-up day organized in Trussville this morning. Bilal and I signed up to join one of the Paine Primary School teams. We made it to the Mall around 7:45am (early for me on a weekend). The kids wore bright orange vests for safety.

It was a chilly start to the day, about 42 degrees when we started out. But it became a little warmer and much more pleasant as the day progressed. Our team was assigned a long, winding street in Trussville, and we set to work with large garbage bags and gloves, filling them up as we walked along the street. Bilal stopped and took a break in the middle.

We came back with several bags full of discarded bottles, Styrofoam, and other miscellaneous pieces of trash. And the satisfaction that we did something good for the city and the environment in general. Hopefully it will also be a lesson to this generation, not to litter the area where they live because that trash will be there for a very long time.

It's Pajama Day!

There is a fundraising program underway at Bilal's school this week. As of yesterday his class had raised the most donations for the Boosterthon Fun Run, scheduled to be held next Thursday. So in honor of being ahead, his class was allowed to wear PJs to school today.

And yes, he did wear sneakers; he did not go barefoot to school! I have no idea why he looks so sleepy in the photo, though. He did not roll out of bed and come downstairs without changing, in fact he put on a clean pair of PJs this morning. I promise!

Spring Formal

Last Friday was the Shades Valley High School prom, and yesterday was JCIB's Spring Formal/ prom. We took Safa down to the Botanical Gardens to have some photos with her classmates, before they all went out to dinner.

Sigh, the reality is really kicking in. This is her junior year, she is growing up, and before we know it, will be heading off to college. Just one more year to savor. This summer she'll be touring colleges, and likely by this time next year she'll know where she plans to spend the next four years. I'm not ready to let her go. This has to be the hardest part of parenthood!

Which one's the real deal?!

Is that Safa impersonating a flamingo, or is the bird doing its best 'Safa' impersonation? Hehe!

And here are some more random photos from Spring Break. These are from Broadway at the Beach.

We all played putt-putt (and I failed miserably!) Not my thing.

Safa was evidently very proud of herself.

Then we spent some time walking around, taking in the sights and sounds.

Opportunistic seagull!

And bought humungous bags of cotton candy!

Definitely not an everyday treat. And yes, we did feed them real lunch too!

A party at the Park

Bilal and I went to the playground yesterday for little Miss J's birthday party. She just turned 5 a few days ago. It was a perfect day to be outdoors, quite a contrast from the chilly, wet weather, earlier in the day.

Bilal loves the little mini zip line, it's his favorite thing to play on at the park.

And after playing for a while, there was pink princess cake.

Perfect for the birthday Princess!

Junior prom

Safa has two events to go to this year, the Shades Valley High School prom, which is tonight, and then next week is the JCIB Spring formal. The second one is kind of a big deal. Today a couple of her friends came over after school to hang out and get ready for the evening.

Safa's nails were perfectly ready,

A little guy with a monocle and a tuxedo! Her date to the prom, hah!

Open House and a music program

Monday evening we went to Bilal's school for his music program. It was short and sweet, just four songs, but the gym was packed. The school is expanding so much that the first grade program had to be divided into two evenings. It was great to see so many parents and grandparents there supporting the kids. Unfortunately even though we got to school on time we had to sit quite far back and didn't have a great view of Bilal. But overall watching the kids was a lot of fun. At least we were able to take a photo from the distance. See him?

After the program we went to Bilal's classroom to check out his work and meet his teacher.

He showed us his journal entry.

'Hi mom and dad. Welcome to open house. Look at the stuff in our classroom. Don't forget the art. I hope you enjoy it.'
And we saw his locker, decorated with art work.

And here he is with his sweet teacher Mrs. G.

He really loves first grade!
