In the spirit of the season...

.... we decided to carve a pumpkin. The boys and I browsed the web for some printable templates, and found many that were the traditional Jack-o-Lantern, and others that were a little unconventional.

The boys settled on something not so seasonal.

It's Boba Fett, from Star Wars! Well, their pumpkin, their choice. And actually I had a very small part in creating the finished result. Aside from removing the seeds and thinning the walls a bit, Hamza and Bilal pretty much carved it all by themselves. Not bad!

Even though it doesn't quite say "Boo!"

Who's the birthday boy?

It's Mobeen!

Our sweet nephew Mobeen turned four today, and we celebrated it with a party at McWane Center. He is crazy about cars of all sorts, so naturally, the cake was a car too.

A Ferrari! And delicious too, from everyone's favorite bakery, Edgar's.

After pizza, cake and ice cream we all scattered to roam the adventure halls. There is a new bubble exhibit, that kept us entertained for a while.

How does it feel to be standing in a bubble?

And then we went upstairs and checked out the Clifford Exhibit.

And played some drums.

Mohsin had a great time too! Even though he looks shocked in this picture when I asked him to stop and say 'cheese'.

The other siblings:

And in the evening they all came over. We took out Moe's for dinner, and had more birthday cake, of course!

Looking forward to a lazy day tomorrow.

Preparing for Eid al Adha

Tomorrow we celebrate Eid ul Adha. The day will start with a gathering of members of the Muslim Community for Eid prayers, followed by a few smaller events through the day. Safa has a crazy busy school schedule, so she won't be taking the day off, and Hamza wants to check in to school after prayers. So Bilal will be the only one who will actually have the entire day off. But school or no school, we still have to make it feel like Eid. So this afternoon I took Safa to the mall for henna on her hands.

Nice, intricate design. First hand complete, and on to the second.
And the end result:

This last one is after we came home, and the henna was already drying up and starting to peel a bit. But Bilal didn't know that. So Safa took the opportunity to chase him around my bedroom and pretend to smear it all over him. It ended up something like this:

They obviously forgot that Mama's bedroom is supposed to be a no fight zone! Or maybe it just doesn't include pillow fights!

Concert Night

I took Safa and two of her friends to a concert at Workplay last night. Great venue! And what a show! MUTEMATH is one of Safa's favorite alternative bands. Before the concert we met at Panera for a quick bite, and then drove into downtown for the show.

The opening act was a group called Civil Twilight, another alternative rock band, originally from Cape Town, South Africa. Not my everyday music, but quite enjoyable.

And after their performance, we waited about half an hour for the next band to get set up. The kids took the opportunity to snap some photos.

I had only heard a few of the main act, MUTEMATH's songs before, mostly from Safa's collection. I'm not so sure about the music (the girls loved it and were singing along to almost every song) but I have to admit, they really know how to entertain the audience!

Yes, for a while he jumped on to an air mattress and did some serious crowd surfing. Quite spectacular!

Confetti everywhere!

By the time the concert was over it was approaching midnight. We stopped for the girls to get another quick pic before we headed home.

This whole 'chaperoning' thing is really widening my music horizons!

Too many favorites!

I'm so excited to be able to share some more pics from our most recent portrait session. Samantha did an amazing job as usual. We have used her as a photographer several times over the past 4 or so years, and have never been disappointed. I was looking through the digital copies of our portraits, and had a hard time picking out the ones I loved the most. So, here are a bunch:

And this one might be one of my absolute favorites. Yup, you can tell they are all his:

And a couple that, sadly, represent our family all too well:

Hi tech!
