More about Washington, DC

A little more on our recent trip to Washington, DC. I don't know if I mentioned this already, but the forum was APPNA (the Association of Physicians of Pakistani descent, of North America). Friday evening was our medical school alumni meeting from 6-9pm. This is the first year we have attended the convention, but we heard the turnout from our medical school is the most it's ever been, so we were excited to be there. There were 9 members from our graduating class of 1993, from all over the country, including Houston, Detroit, St. Louis and Boston to mention a few. It was great to see the next generation; most of us were there with our kids, possibly future doctors? After dinner we put the kids to bed and eveyone from '93 met downstairs for snacks, and talked until long after midnight. It was great to catch up on what's been going on in everyones' lives, from choice of medical specialty, having and raising kids, and even their taste in cars.

Saturday morning we had a room reserved for everyone to meet again, and get to know the kids a bit. This was unfortunately cut short because most of us had other plans later in the day, but we did get to take some pictures, and as always, all the little boys ran around like maniacs.

Saturday evening was the big APPNA banquet. It started off with speeches by several noteworthy speakers, and ended in a musical program. I managed to spend a little time with Bilal, and then had to leave, but had the opportunity to listen to the guest speaker, Congressman Keith Ellison. He is the first Muslim to be elected to congress, and had a lot of inspiring things to say. He is a great speaker, and Safa, who loves debate and public speaking, was totally awestruck. Bilal had a meltdown just after his talk, so he and I made a quick departure from the elegant affair, and the kids hung around to listen to more speeches and eat a lavish dinner. At $100 a ticket it was a pity I didn't even get to eat, but listening to a few of the speakers was definitely worth it.
